We believe that people should be hired for what they CAN DO… Instead of not being hired for what they CANNOT DO.
The Prince George Brain Injured Group provides a variety of employment services for persons with a brain injury, which may include supported placement in part time and full time positions, contracted services (such as assisting with catering), and the incredibly innovative and successful Downtown Clean Team.
The Prince George Downtown Clean Team
In May, 2009, after being approached by a survivor of brain injury (Tommy Sulin) who began voluntarily to pick up litter and garbage in the downtown core, the Prince George Brain Injured Group established a program to begin cleaning debris from the downtown streets of Prince George. Later in the year, PG BIG decided to find a way for the project to become a paid employment program, so they contacted the City of Prince George, and the Downtown Business Improvement Association (DBIA) to open discussions. Once the local and legal logistics were handled, PG BIG was successful in obtaining short term funding for wages through a Canadian Government wage subsidy program.
In 2010, PG BIG was given its first contract with the DBIA and City, and the DOWNTOWN CLEAN TEAM was born. Established as the PRINCE GEORGE CLEAN AND SAFE PROGRAM, snow shoveling was later added, and the once temporary seasonal program became year round. Though no longer directly involved, Tommy stays in contact with the Clean Team, and is still proud to use his marvelous smile to help to make the downtown a better place to live and work. Over the years, many brain injured survivors have worked in this venture, and many have gone onto other gainful and rewarding employment. Clean Team members say that the best part of their job is when every day merchants and downtown shoppers stop to thank them, and tell them what a great job they are doing.
We believe that establishing partnerships are beneficial to all parties. Our Clean Team has developed many mutually rewarding partnerships, such as with:
– The Prince George Brain Injured Group
– Downtown Business Improvement Association Prince George (DBIA)
– Businesses of the downtown core
– The City of Prince George
– and, most importantly, with other Clean Team members.
